About The Journal
About the International Journal of
Transpersonal Studies
Now in publication for over 30 years, the International Journal
of Transpersonal Studies (IJTS) is a double-blind peer-reviewed
journal. It was founded in 1981 by Don Diespecker, PhD, an
Australian transpersonal psychologist and psychology professor, and
published as The Australian Journal of Transpersonal Psychology
until 1992. The journal was subsequently published under its
current title through the University of Hawaii from 1993 until
2002, under the editorship of Philippe Gross, PhD and Sam Shapiro,
PhD. IJTS was then acquired by Saybrook University, where it was
published from 2003 until 2006 under the editorship of Harris
Friedman and Doug MacDonald. In 2007 Floraglades Foundation (a
private non-profit organization) assumed responsibility for the the
journal, where it was published under the co-editorship of Harris
Friedman, PhD and Glenn Hartelius, PhD. from 2007
through 2009. Harris Friedman, former president of the
newly-revived International Transpersonal Association, was able to
obtain funding to build the journal's website through the
University of Florida. Since 2010, Glenn Hartelius has assumed the
role of Editor, and until 2012 Harris Friedman served in the role
of Senior Editor. Initial approval has been obtained for
sponsorship of the journal by the International Transpersonal
Association.
From its founding, IJTS has been a quarto size (9"
x 12") journal. It has typically appeared as two issues per year,
with between 100 and 200 pages per issue, though there have been
some exceptions. For example, Vol. 6 spanned the years 1986-1987
(one issue for two years), and Vols. 19-27 consisted of a single
issue per year. Beginning with Vol. 28 (2009), the journal has
resumed its schedule of publishing two issues per year.

International Journal of Transpersonal
Studies
Editorial Policy
The International Journal of Transpersonal Studies (IJTS) is
dedicated to theory, research, practice, and discourse in the area
of transpersonal studies. Transpersonal studies may be generally
described as a multidisciplinary movement concerned with the
exploration of higher consciousness, expanded self/identity,
spirituality, and human potential.
IJTS publishes original theoretical, analytic, methodological,
empirical (both qualitative and quantitative), practice-oriented,
and artistic articles that focus upon topics falling within the
domain of transpersonal studies. IJTS is committed to maintaining a
focus on transpersonal experience, concepts, and practices while
embracing theoretical, methodological, and cross-disciplinary
pluralism; that is, IJTS is committed to ensure that the fullest
possible range of approaches to inquiry and expression are
represented in the articles published. Though there is no
restriction on who may publish in the IJTS, emphasis is given to
the publication of articles from a spectrum of international
contributors and from varying disciplinary perspectives.
Each edition of the IJTS may consist of three sections.
General: The General Section is dedicated to original
articles of high quality that are judged to be of potential
interest to a wide audience of readers. Articles published in this
section embody eclectic topics and a variety of approaches to
inquiry and expression. Ideally, a diversity of articles on theory,
research, and practice/application will find representation in each
issue of IJTS.
Special Topic: A Special Topic section may or may not be
included in each issue of IJTS and, if included, will contain
several articles dedicated to a specific theme or topic germane to
transpersonal studies. Examples of potential themes for this
section include the following: qualitative and quantitative
methodologies in transpersonal studies, contributions of specific
disciplines to transpersonal studies (e.g., transpersonal
approaches in anthropology, psychology, medicine, sociology,
ecology, biology, art, and music), conceptions of consciousness,
ecstatic experience, systems of knowing, entheogenic/psychedelic
research, applications of transpersonal theory and/or practice
(e.g., related to global sustainability, health care,
organizational systems, and psychotherapy), issues important to the
development of transpersonal studies (e.g., history of
transpersonal studies, transpersonal studies in designated
geographically or politically bounded areas such as Europe or
China), and postmodern perspectives on transpersonal studies. In
addition, compilations of articles from major transpersonal
conferences may be published as a Special Topic section. Potential
contributors who would like to propose one or more articles for a
Special Topics section are invited to correspond with the Editor
prior to submission of any manuscripts.
Reader Comments: A third section of the journal is
dedicated primarily to reader comments on articles previously
published in IJTS. Emphasis is given to comments that are scholarly
in nature and which clarify and/or extend concepts and/or ideas
discussed in previously published articles. However, also included
are reviews of notable recently published books, articles from
other journals, and special events (e.g., professional
conferences).
Author Submission Guidelines
All manuscripts should be written in English and prepared in
accordance with the guidelines of the 6th edition of the
Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association. When
submitting manuscripts for the General or Special Topic sections,
please include affiliation (for each author), an abstract (up to
120 words), five to seven keywords, a biographical statement for
each author (up to 175 words), and e-mail address for author
communication. For manuscripts submitted to the Reader Comments
section, an abstract and biography are not required. Manuscripts
for the General and Special Topics sections should not exceed
10,000 words (including text, references, notes, etc.). Submissions
for the Reader Comments section should not exceed 4,000 words
(including text, references, etc) and the cover letter should
specify the IJTS article, book, article from another source, or
special event which is the basis of the manuscript.
Manuscripts submitted to IJTS must be original, neither
previously published nor under consideration for publication
elsewhere, and must not infringe on the copyright or any other
proprietary right of any other party. Contributing authors are
solely responsible for obtaining written permission, where
appropriate, to reprint copywritten material. Submission of a
manuscript irrevocably grants explicit permission by the author for
it to be published in IJTS and acknowledgment that he/she has the
full right and power to authorize IJTS to publish it and, if it is
accepted and published (either online and/or in print), to also
authorize republishing it in any subsequent edited work (e.g., a
book consisting of manuscripts previously published in IJTS). By
submitting the manuscript to IJTS for publication, the author
warrants and represents that he/she is the owner of all rights to
the work, that the work is his/her original work, that the work
contains no material that is defamatory, libelous, obscene,
violates any right of privacy or is otherwise contrary to law, that
the grant of rights herein have not heretofore been assigned or
otherwise encumbered and are in all respects free and clear, ands
that all statements in the submission are the responsibility of the
author and do not necessarily represent the views of the Editor or
staff of IJTS. In turn, IJTS grants to the author the non-exclusive
right to use all or part of the manuscript in any book or article
written by the author, provided that there is a full citation of
the issue of IJTS in which the manuscript is published. If the
manuscript is not published in IJTS, all aspects of the agreement
made by submitting it shall become null and void; and all rights
transferred by submitting the article shall revert to the
author.
The Editor reviews all manuscripts at time of submission to
assess their general suitability for publication in the IJTS.
Manuscripts submitted for the General or a Special Topics section
that are deemed suitable for consideration for publication are
subsequently peer-reviewed. Manuscripts initially deemed unsuitable
do not undergo the peer-review process. Manuscripts submitted for
the Reader Comments section may or may not receive peer review.
Requests for a masked review may be made to the Editor. For
empirical articles, author must state in the cover letter that
he/she has complied fully with APA ethical standards in the
treatment of humans or animals studied and will have data available
for examination for up to 5 years past the date of publication.
Manuscripts will be accepted as e-submissions to the Editor at
the following e-address: payattention1@mac.com. IJTS
is not responsible for the loss or damage of any materials
submitted as hardcopy and will not return any hardcopy submissions.
Please send manuscripts as an attachment in Word format (.doc files
only, please). Graphic files are also welcome for figures and
photographs.
